NEXT TIME AROUND
By Ricky Vermont © 2020
Once in a while, I lose my attention
Sometimes it seems life is only a dream
Expressing regret is not my intention
But living is often like swimming upstream
I look in the mirror and see my reflection
I have no idea of what others perceive
I try to shrug off my gross imperfection
Imagine a fairy tale I can believe
Next time around, I might be a sailor
Or maybe a Mexican mother of three
Next time around, I can try something different
Become a new person mysteriously
I turn away if somebody spots me
Maybe it’s just a bad case of the blues
I'd like to think that I could go scott free
Cause I’ve lived so long and I’ve paid my dues
Ten times a day I ask the same question
Ten times a day only silence is heard
Where is a clue or even one small suggestion
To help to explain the sublime and absurd
Next time around, I might be a soldier
Or maybe a prominent French VIP
Next time around, I can try something different
I’ll rewrite my story posthumously
Who in their right mind would choose this existence?
Who would be foolish enough to agree?
Once I was born I received no assistance
I had to stand up and pretend to be me
Next time around, I might be a farmer
Or maybe a welder in a steel factory
Next time around, I can try something different
I’d like to do better, but there’s no guarantee
Next time around, I might be a painter
Or maybe a doctor of philosophy
Next time around, I’ll continue my journey
I’ll laugh and I’ll cry
Eternally
